Featured Artist: Kaliptus ~ October

Kaliptus (Born April 16, 1984 in Lisbon, Portugal) is a NY/NJ graduate artist from SVA with a BFA in animation and an MFA in computer art.  He uses painting, film, motion graphics, animation, stop-motion, video-mixing, multimedia, interactive arts, installations and more to express ideas that are usually surreal, visionary and vital to the philosophies and understandings of the human consciousness. Kaliptus has been commissioned to work on projects for Alex Grey, Marvel, Stephen King, DC Comics, Black Tide, MTV, Prudential Center, Zoomdout, Shpongle, Sneaux, Orange County Choppers, American Choppers, and more. He is currently living in New Jersey and is a busy, self-employed freelance artist, working on a wide variety of projects from his home studio.  Intrigued by his self-expression and his mind-bending creativity, I reached out to him to elaborate more on his intuitive driven creations.  Kaliptus speaks about his upbringing,  motivation, visions, messages, goals, bridging “the intuitive brain and the technical brain to create works of art that reveal the Transpersonal Realms of Mind”, the creative process, alignment, consciousness, and Light-Tech!

  1. You’re a Multimedia Artist.  Share with us your upbringing in the visual arts world, how and where did it all begin?

Heya, I’m Kaliptus. I went to SVA (School of Visual Arts) and got a BFA in traditional animation and an MFA in computer arts. I became very well rounded in many different types of the visual arts early on in age but lately I mostly paint. I’m a self taught painter but with an archival of 3d knowledge etc so I paint with a digital mind but ultimately still eager to explore more and further learn.

  1. Who or what inspires you on a daily basis, what drives your constant motivation?

Since I’m often bridging the intuitive & the technical to create works of art that depict the “transpersonal” realms of consciousness, I’m going say that my main inspiration is “Consciousness” itself. To me consciousness has so many mysteries that the inspiration never really ends and only gets more immense over time.  I’m interested and inspired not just by visionary art but in all things that attempt to depict transpersonal aspects of consciousness. Lately, things like Wolfram demonstrations and 3d dynamics physics simulations on programs like for example Autodesk Maya or even Processing, have also been very inspiring. To me… if it’s a part of my reality/perspective, it’s a part of my consciousness, so… anything can inspire :::)

  1. Your art is very geometric, it’s an alignment to the Universe.  Do you feel that your visions have a profound message to unfold?  What is the underlying message?

In all of my works I definitely try to reflect upon some of these transpersonal ideas that I have been exploring for the last 10 years. But often, I try to make my works mirrors for the audience to explore. Though each and every piece has a very specific meaning to me, I want people to find their own meanings. If I define things too much then it will take away from the experience so I would rather not tell some of the underlying “easter eggs” juxtapozed within my works. But if we ever meet and have a one on one dialogue, please ask away.

  1. What are your goals for now and into 2016.  What would you like to accomplish?

As of now, I’m currently working on a bunch of art for my next solo show “Light-Tech” at Knew Conscious gallery in Denver, CO. But also taking commissions and touring a bit, live painting etc. My most important goal for the rest of the year is to establish “Light-Tech” as a universe of its own. I’m doing heavy research for this one, aesthetically, I’m combining elements from Eastern mysticism and merging them with elements that are sort of Westernized robo-futurism or holo-transhumanism based. The idea is that Light-Tech is a sort extra dimensional archival of overmind technologies made out of a Light that can be perceived but cannot be measured. So Light Tech has to do with these sort of Mind Light technologies.. Light bodies, Light generators, Light cities, vehicles, self-transforming bridges, etc.. Like hacking the pleroma of consciousness and attaining access to a bonus level within reality for all. I don’t want want to give away too much for the show but if you are interested in finding out more just stay tuned and keep and eye out for “Light-Tech” next year at Knew Conscious gallery.

  1. So with multimedia, you have mention that you’re trying to bridge “the intuitive brain and the technical brain to create works of art that reveal the Transpersonal Realms of Mind”.  Can you elaborate more on this?

I guess on a more scientific level I may be trying to merge my right brain with my left, while also merging top with bottom and side with side etc. I try to use my  intuitive intelligence and raw imagination in combination with technical and often tedious approaches to deliver ideas that I feel strongly about.

  1. Share with us the creative process, how do you initiate the process?

The process initiation is very simple. Often as soon as I have time I just jump to it. Sometimes with music sometimes without. If I have an idea, I get an urge or itch that won’t go away until I execute the idea into some artistic expression so I often jump to it while inevitably chasing and attaining access to some abstract sense of freedom during the process. It feels rewarding to just create so the initial jump is often random and I also often don’t prepare everything I need before starting so my studio is a mess.

  1. Aside multimedia, what are some of your other hobbies that you engage in?  What would you like to do more or elevate further in?

I definitely enjoy meditation, reading, travel, etc… Lately I’ve also been getting into collecting some art myself. Feels good to give back to the community too etc.

  1. What keeps your chakras aligned?  Do you engage in any Spiritual rituals such as meditation or yogic practices?

It’s hard to define a chakra but I totally know what you mean. For me to feel aligned I often need to fix the vibes around and within me. Here’s a metaphor.. For lack of better words, the “mind vibes” for me are like a metaphysical garden. If I don’t tend to it often by trimming weeds, watering the lotuses etc. everything becomes overpowered by the weeds and lotuses cannot grow. I need to remind myself often of how much a blessing this life is and how much we all are a unique gift to the universe. Gratitude often aligns me, but also the family at home is my greater love and that does a whole lot too. It’s hard to say. Sometimes I just align myself in the moment out of shear will and yet other times I’m often un-aligned and entangled… It depends on my mood.. I guess I can be moody too.. But I definitely strive for alignment. The possibilities for that are endless too.

  1. I love the color scheme in your art, very fluorescent and vivid.  Tell us about the role with bright colors in your creations.

The colors combos I use are just the ones I want to see in art. I paint what I love so I can take inspiration from a beautiful sunset gradient or a Heavy Metal Magazine from the 70’s ..Doesnt matter what it is, but I know what I like and often try to push it.

  1. Anything else you would like to share with us?

Thank you so much for taking the time to interview me. And for all who are interested in finding out more about my solo show “Light-Tech”, Stay tuned! ;;;;)
