Sleepyhead:

Soteg, EPROM, Burial, Flying Lotus, Taal Mala, Mimosa, Sub Swara, Etc.

Q. Top labels from the past year?

A.

Knowa KnowOne:

I feel like the old concept of a “Record Label” is really disintegrating. I don’t really even associate a lot of the new releases I’m into with record labels. A lot of the dubstep coming out is label-based, but there are these new digital labels popping up and releasing tons of mediocre stuff, especially dubstep. I’d say that Om Records is doing something new and branching out into hiphop and more diverse territory. Here in the bay there is Muti Music which is breaking a lot of new artists.

Sleepyhead:

Hyperdub, Tempa, Ed Banger, Bpitch Control, Dirty Bird,1320, Dim Mak etc.. I could honestly go on and on since music has boomed in the last few years more so than before with Internet labels and artists and such.

Q. What kinds of events do you play?

A.

Knowa KnowOne:

Mostly underground events, lots of burning man related stuff. All kinds of venues, from clubs and warehouse parties, to big festivals and renegade desert events. I just got back from 2 weeks on the road that started with a campout party on top of a mountain outside of LA.

It was on the edge of a cliff where you took a ski lift to the party. Then on to a 3 day full moon “Moontribe” party in the deep desert, and then to another big campout party in redwoods forest outside of Santa Cruz. Thats just the way the summertime goes here in Cali. We have a Cyphertown party in an underground warehouse loft this weekend in Oakland.

Sleepyhead:

All kinds…. West coast festivals, clubs partys. Burning man and surrounding events. Sts9 afterparty have become regular. SF crew Cyphertown partys. Mid-west, east coast … Pretty dope parties rather constantly. I like inovative party ideas… Yuri’s night, Alcatraz party. Party in odd dangerous or illegal places are great.

Q. What’s happening in the bay with music right now?

A.

Knowa KnowOne:

Things are really wide open right now. There are a lot of new artitsts and a lot of DJs are moving into production for the first time, which is giving the bay even more of a unique sound. Dubstep has taken over and new djs and crews are just popping up, probably folks that were doing drum and bass. It’s kind of created a split between the breaks that had been prevalent at a lot of the burner parties and everyone thats getting more into dub. Cyphertown is going into exciting new territory and creating events that fuse hiphop and electronic music with art and activism. The bay area has always been a real mixture of elements, so i’m looking forward to seeing whats going to come out of this summer.

Sleepyhead:

More dubstep than the world needs… In my impression is that dj’s are just keeping up with the times… Everyone plays dubstep, DJs who use to play D&B now play dubstep as if D&B never happened…its getting VERY boring.. So Is the “glitch” Style in SF, although it’s just a production technique and not an actual style really.. Its seemed to get latched onto and over used quicker than alot of the local haight street hookers. Lots of good 80’s throwback style aswell… I kinda dig the retro steeZ…the same things that have always been happening I guess…. Alot of Rock and Roll…. Lots of Hip Hop… Not to much techno in SF anymore really… Or its just patiently chilling in the backround till it returns from Berlin

Q. How did KnowSleep get started?

A.

Knowa KnowOne:

We first met and played music together back in like 2004, when we were all living in Florida with Souleye. I came out to the west coast and didn’t see those guys until they came out here and we started another hiphop project that was Sleepyhead, Souleye, SyDeFx and Myself, which
didn’t last very long. Last summer Sleepy came up to the bay to stay with me and we produced most of the KnowSleep album material in the month leading up to Burning Man.

Sleepyhead:

Knowsleep really started early last year when I came to SF and Noah and myself made a tune called “Brother Gone” I later moved to Noahs house and the rest of the album was made up until Burning Man… But Noah and I have been homies for a min.

Q. What’s in the future for KnowSleep, Street Ritual and yourselves.

A.

Knowa KnowOne:

More artists and more releases….

Sleepyhead:

Future….

Knowsleep has a bundle of new tunes and more to come so I’m sure a new Knowsleep album will happen. I have 2 Sleepyhead cuts coming out on 1320 Records through Lowpro Lounge. And a load of shows…… Basically growing and such….lots of goodness afoot! Big love!!!
